Thomas More Studies

We, Amici Thomae Mori, the Friends of Thomas More, are a society of friends, from a dozen countries around the world, who like to exchange news and scholarship concerning Thomas More, his time, his works and his message. Our society was founded in 1962 and has been active ever since, producing two publications, Moreana, the scholarly journal, and the Gazette Thomas More, a newsletter published twice a year.

Why should the 21st century keep an interest in Thomas More, a man living in the 16th century? Because More left a rich heritage, as a humanist, as the author of Utopia, as a forerunner in education, and as the unwavering moral figure who chose to die rather than betray his conscience and his faith – for which the Catholic Church canonized him in 1535.

We, Amici Thomae Mori, are convinced that Thomas More’s ideals were not only utopian but deserve being followed even today:

• Humanism, placing the human being at the core of its preoccupations,
• Politics, understood as service towards the common good,
• Justice, respectful of truth and human rights,
• Education, the responsibility of families and schools.

With that aim in mind, the society Amici Thomae Mori leads two complementary actions:

• On the one hand, as a scholarly society, and mainly addressing a readership of university scholars, it aims at developing research both on Thomas More, the author, humanist and historical figure, and on the Renaissance humanists such as his friends ERASMUS, BUDÉ and VIVES. This is achieved through the journal Moreana, founded by Germain Marc’hadour in 1963, now in the hands of the Center for Thomas More Studies, edited by Dr. Travis Curtright, published twice a year and read in a great number of universities all over the world.
• On the other hand, as a community of friends, the society Amici Thomae Mori encourages contacts among all admirers of Thomas More, organizing conferences and seminars and publishing the Gazette Thomas More, a multilingual newsletter (mainly in English and French) that keeps up-to-date with the work in progress of More scholars, voices opinions, gives news of events, of books newly released, gathers press cuttings around Thomas More and his time and publishes short articles.
